若說「不管怎麼造業，受報都一樣」，梵行就不可能。一塊鹽丟進一杯水，水鹹得不能喝；同一塊鹽丟進恆河，恆河不鹹，因為水量大。沒有修身、戒、心、慧的人，小惡也墮惡處；修了的人，同樣的小惡，這一生就受完。

‘No matter how this person performs a deed, they experience it the same way.’ This being so, the spiritual life could not be lived … Suppose a person was to drop a lump of salt into a mug of water. … Would that mug of water become salty and undrinkable? … Suppose a person was to drop a lump of salt into the Ganges River. … Would the Ganges River become salty and undrinkable? … No, sir. … Because the Ganges River is a vast mass of water.

聖弟子一樣有樂受、苦受、不苦不樂受。凡夫像中了一箭，又中第二箭；聖弟子中了一箭，不中第二箭：有苦受，不在上面加憂悲哭號。

A learned noble disciple also feels pleasant, painful, and neutral feelings. … It’s like a person who is struck with an arrow, only to be struck with a second arrow. … It’s like a person who is struck with an arrow, but was not struck with a second arrow. … In the same way, when a learned noble disciple experiences painful physical feelings they don’t sorrow or wail or lament.

生的、造作的、有為的、會壞的東西，怎麼可能不壞？

How could it possibly be so that what is born, created, conditioned, and liable to wear out should not wear out?

鴦掘魔羅證果後托缽，有人丟石頭、丟棍子、丟碎石打他。佛陀說：你現在此生承受的，是本來可能讓你受苦許多年的業。

Now at that time someone threw a stone that hit Aṅgulimāla, someone else threw a stick, and someone else threw gravel. … You’re experiencing in this very life the result of deeds that might have caused you to be tormented in hell for many years, many hundreds or thousands of years.

白話引這一段不是拿任何人跟他比，只為一件事：做過很重的事的人，經文也沒有說他完了；做過的事算數，人還是能變。
